The majority of TriStats voters have selected Alex Yee as the athlete they think will win the men’s world title at the WTCS Final in Pontevedra.
In total, 62% of voters preferred Yee to the alternatives.
Yee will arrive with a slim lead at the top of the WTCS standings and will have to beat his closest rival, Hayden Wilde, if he is to secure the title. Having won the Paris Olympic Test Event with a majestic display, Yee will be confident of repeating the feat.
Although Wilde is right behind Yee in the standings, he was not the next most popular pick to be world champion. Instead, Vasco Vilaca, ranked 3rd, took 24% of the vote. In turn, Wilde received 12%.
Of the pair, Wilde is the only one to have won a WTCS race. This year, he triumphed in Hamburg and Yokohama and his performance at the latter should leave no doubt as to his capabilities over the Olympic distance.
Vilaca, though, has won four Series medals this year and has elevated himself to a new level. He will need to foster some kind of breakaway if he is to not only beat Yee and Wilde but beat them by enough places to become the world champion. It is possible, though. As it happens, we also predicted a Vilaca victory and world title at this weekend’s event.
Finally, “someone else” received only 2% of the vote, indicating that the readers took a dim view on the prospects of anyone outside the top-3. Leo Bergere, the defending world champion, used a sensational breakaway to win last year’s WTCS Final and could do the same again. However, the voters seemed unconvinced that lightning will strike twice.
